William Clyde Scott

January 28, 1955 — October 16, 2017

From a little tyke with orange hair, a mischievous grin and twinkling blue eyes, Bill Scott Junior was the apple of his family’s eyes. Even after he became a big, tall guy with graying hair and a gruff Grizzly bear demeanor, everyone, even his students, knew that he was a huggable Teddy Bear with a big heart. And we will all miss him.William Clyde Scott Jr. died Oct. 16 of natural causes. Born in Monroe, LA, in 1955, Bill moved to Texas in ‘56 and became a Longhorn fan. Like his father, Bill was a friendly, outgoing guy who loved people. Graduating from Lake Highlands High School in 1974, he began working part time as a student custodian, collecting records and saving money, but life changed when he met the LHHS summer school secretary, Jeffrie June Mercer. Both were attending UNT and working for the Richardson ISD during the summer, but Bill began setting serious goals: bought a house in Garland, fell in love with Jeffrie, got married on New Year’s Eve 1977, and in December 1978 Jeffrie graduated from UNT followed by Bill in May 1980.Bill was a man on a mission. By 1983, the family moved to a larger house in Richardson built to hold their three sons: Matt in 1983, Ben in 1985 and Caleb in 1996, and the orange began to fade as each son graduated from Texas A&M, where Caleb is now a junior. During this time, Bill’s teaching career in wood and metal shop, electricity, CAD and transportation started at Garland’s Coyle Middle School in Rowlett (6 years) and then continued at Hudson Middle School in Sachse where he taught for 14 years with plans to retire in 2018. Mid-career at Hudson, he taught two years at Naaman Forest High, but returned to Hudson due to health issues. Although an Indian Guide as a kid, Bill became a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 81, but he was especially proud his sons all became Eagle Scouts who learned to be leaders and to enjoy camping and Dublin Dr Pepper.Active in Woodcreek Church (formerly Richland Bible Fellowship) for over 20 years, Bill taught 5th and 6th grade boys’ Sunday School for several years and also attended Bible Study Fellowship for a decade. He also coached Little League Baseball; and for many years, Bill was a painter of homes, churches and never-ending projects at his own house.Preceded in death by his parents, William and Joyce Scott, Bill is survived by Jeffrie J. Scott, his wife of almost 40 years, and their three sons Matthew C. & Lauren Scott and grandson, Colin, of Katy; Benjamin M. & Melissa Scott, Dallas; and Caleb C. Scott, a junior at Texas A&M. His two sisters are Sarah Scott, Richardson, and Becky & Gary Owens, Columbus, Ohio. His nephews include Chris & Rachel Owens and son Nathan, The Woodlands; and Jeff & Jane Owens, Simi Valley, CA. Also, Jeffrie’s brother, Clyde & Julie Mercer of Dallas.Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 20, 5-8 p.m. at Charles W. Smith Funeral Home (2925 Fifth St., Sachse, TX 75048.
