Tyler Morgan Powers

November 8, 1995 — April 9, 2017

Tyler Morgan Powers, age 21 of Wylie, TX, passed away on April 9, 2017 in Dallas, TX. He was born on November 8, 1995 in Garland, TX to Keith Andrew and Sammi Leigh (Nichols) Powers. Tyler had many hobbies, which included collecting comic books, playing video games, and reading. He was a huge fan of Saturday Night Live, and he loved to eat.

If you had the privilege of meeting Tyler, then you probably walked away from that meeting with a sense of warmth and content. Tyler, though only 21, could make you look at your own life and question whether or not you are living life to its fullest. Tyler was very passionate about equal rights, immigration, religion vs. his own beliefs, and of course speaking up for what’s right and what’s wrong.

When Tyler met someone, they would inevitably become a friend for life. To this day when we go to Chick-fil-a, employees ask about him and his sister. They always say, “We are keeping Tyler in our prayers”. He frequented Keith’s Comic’s where he became friends with the sales people and would hang out with them occasionally to attend late night movie premiers. On occasion we would have to go to Game Stop for him to pick up a pre-ordered video game because he was in the hospital and the sales people there would always ask how he was doing, always commenting on how awesome he was.

Tyler loved Asian food so much that he ate at Lite Wok almost every day while a student at Plano East Senior High. They called him by name and, to hear his friends talk about it, we imagine they treated him like Norm from Cheers.

There are so many funny stories about Tyler, because he had humor like an SNL cast member. It could’ve been funny, or may not have been, but no matter what it would make you laugh just because of his timing. He wanted to be happy, that’s what he loved most. His favorite place on earth was Disney World. He visited Disney World 5 times and Disney Land once. No matter how crowded or how long it would take us to get there, that is the only place in the world he would tolerate heat, crowds, walking, cheap food and small children. It just made him happy.

Most people, especially his Papas referred to him as an “Old Soul”. He had a love for music. Music of all kinds, from the Beatles to Michael Jackson, a little bit of country to Marilyn Manson. Once while under a local anesthesia, he told the nurse, for no reason, “Music makes the world go ‘round”.

Most people don’t know this, but Tyler saved a woman’s life once. We went to IHop for National Pancake Day. The place was packed, people waiting inside and out and Tyler, as usual, was cold from the air conditioning so he decided to go stand outside and wait. While outside, a lady had a seizure, fell on the ground and hit her face on the concrete. While no one knew what was going on, some people started taking pictures and videos of the situation but no one was trying to help her. Tyler knew something was wrong and immediately called 911. A lady in the waiting area happened to be a nurse so Tyler gave his phone to her to talk to the dispatcher and explain what was happening. Once the ambulance arrived Tyler came back inside and just sat down. We looked at him like, “Are you going to tell us what just happened or what?” He simply said “A lady was having a seizure and I called 911, that’s all.” He didn’t wait to get a pat on the back or recognition, he just went on with his life waiting on the next opportunity to help someone.

Over the last year of his life, Tyler started to focus on preparing us for this day. From trying to take on more responsibility regarding his medicines, insurance and doctor’s appointments, to talking us all through what was coming and what he expected in his final days. We are sure he was scared beyond our own comprehension, but he knew what he had to do and followed through.

We could talk for days about how amazing this little boy who grew up to be the strongest man we’ve ever known, but time doesn’t permit. Instead we are going to leave you with this one last thing about Tyler Morgan Powers, he was a kind hearted man that this world needed but did not deserve.

We love and miss you Tyler.
