Mrs. Tolatha “Lulene” Dotson Baxter Wesson passed away Thursday, December 21, 2017, in the Hardeman County Memorial Hospital in Quanah, Texas at the age of 95.


Lulene is survived by her husband, Dewey Wesson, of Quanah, Texas; a son, Jim Baxter and wife Charlotte of Farmersville, Texas, a daughter, Shirley Mott and husband, Roy of Quanah, a daughter-in-law, Jayne Baxter of Hutto, a daughter, Shana Parmer and husband, Jay of Quanah, one brother, Gene Dotson and wife Vivian of McKinney; Grandchildren, Jimmy Baxter and wife Cathy of Farmersville, Julie Biar of Farmersville, Amanda Talley and husband, Jamie of Quanah, Robbie Baxter and wife Tammy of Tuscola, Krystal Baxter Thurston of Lewisville, Kendall Davis and husband, Jonathan of Mansfield, Courtney Parmer, Zach Parmer, Jace Parmer and Gracelyn Parmer, all of Quanah, Darrell Morgan of Austin, Laura Rinehart and husband, Kurt of Leander. Great Grandchildren, Riley Lowrance, Skyler Sumner, Brandon Talley, Ryan Biar, Baylee Baxter, Abbey Talley, Nathan Biar, Raygan Baxter, Cooper Talley, Taylor Davis, Bryce Baxter, Presley Parmer, Braid Baxter, Bryce Davis, Zayden Rinehart, Delaney Talley, Bentley Parmer, Brantley Rinehart and Bryker Rinehart and a host of nieces, nephews, and beloved friends. Lulene was expecting her first great great grandchild, Amberlyn Talley in January. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William “Hun” Baxter, her grandson Ryan Mott, son Wayne Baxter, her parents, five sisters, and three brothers.


Lulene was born on March 5, 1922 in Culleoka, Texas to John Wayne and Cassie Myrtle Gallaher Dotson. She attended McKinney High School leaving school in November 24, 1938 to marry Hun Baxter. In January 1947, Hun and Lene welcomed their first child, Robert Wayne. Soon after, in April 1948, James “Jim” William joined the family. Then, in December 1951, Shirley Anne was born and this completed their family. In 1999, she moved to Quanah, Texas, and in 2000 married Dewey Wesson, which gained her another daughter, Shana.


In the 1940s, she sang on the radio in Dallas and Sherman with her sister, Eulalia Wallace and her cousin, Johnnie Lee Gooch as “The Dotson Sisters”. At one point they had over 100 songs memorized. She played the piano, guitar and mandolin. In addition to her singing career, she was also an accomplished seamstress, making her own patterns out of newspapers. She sewed samples for the IBJ/PBJ Company that were sent to New York City for marketing. Lene was a hard-working, kind-hearted person, always willing to help anyone in any way she could. She was a member of the Church of Christ.


Visitation will be Saturday evening, December 23, 2017, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home in Quanah, Texas. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at the Fitzhugh Cemetery in Lucas, Texas with Clint Brown officiating. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Baxter, Robbie Baxter, Jamie Talley, Cooper Talley, Ryan Biar, and Riley Lowrance. Memorials may be made to the Quanah Church of Christ.
