Thomas Bert Schaffner

July 22, 1944 — March 31, 2014

Thomas "Tom" Bert Schaffner was born July 22, 1944 in Monahans, Texas and was raised in Odessa with his older brother Harry and older sister Syble by his parents Red and June Carter Schaffner.

He was a 1962 graduate of Permian High School where he was captain of the 1961 Permian Panther football team, and where he met his future wife, Georgia Odam. They were married in June 1964 while he was a student athlete at Baylor University.

Tom graduated in 1967 and went to work for the Travelers Insurance Company in Dallas, Texas. He was transferred to the office in Iowa for 17 years, then back to Texas where he retired as regional vice president in 2004. After retirement, he was able to spend many years following his other passions, hunting, fishing, boating, golfing, poker, cooking, ranching and entertaining.

He was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church where he spent many hours in prayer, and in volunteer service, including serving as an usher for 15 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and RENEW.

Tom was also passionate about his family, guiding his children by example on the playing fields of sports and in the field of life. He and Georgia were blessed with four children, who married four people, who blessed them with 8 grandchildren. TIM and Holly in Kansas with Tommie and Brady; JOE and Jackie in Nebraska with Thomas and Noah; AMY and Cory in Iowa with Natalie, Charlie and Molly; and JOSH and Katie in Indianapolis with John.

He was passionate about his friends, of whom there were many, from childhood, Baylor, work, play and prayer.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, sister, sisters in-law, brother in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and many beloved friends.

He died a peaceful death Monday, March 31, 2014 with his wife and all his children near him, surrounding him with love and prayer.
