Susan Hamilton Jenks Lumsden passed Friday, July 5, in Sachse, Texas. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri, to Robert and Elizabeth Jenks on March 12, 1942.
Susan received a BA in Anthropology from University of Missouri and a BA in Finance from Texas Tech University. She worked in various fields: social work, library services, and billing and insurance processing for medical practices.
Susan married Gerald (Jerry) Lumsden in September of 1966. As a sociologist, Jerry took several professor positions over the years, which had Susan moving with him from Columbia, MO to Lexington, KY to Santa Fe, NM to Starkville, MS, back to New Mexico then to Plainview, TX. In 1982, Jerry took a position with the City of Dallas. The Lumsdens have remained in the Dallas area since then.
Susan was a lover of animals and nature, thus her support of the ASPCA and the Nature Conservancy. And she loved music of all kinds from her childhood on. Even as Alzheimer’s took more and more of her away, hearing Frank Sinatra would bring a smile and words back to the surface, and she would sing along.
In her honor, please consider a gift to an organization supporting animal protection or nature conservation, or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Surviving Susan are Jerry Lumsden, her husband of almost 58 years; her three sisters, Ellen Shoemaker (Dennis), Mary Jenks, and Sara Maneval (Rick); niece Elizabeth Shoemaker, nephew David Shoemaker (Kate), and nephew John Maneval; also a great niece and nephew, Sabella and Dalan Shoemaker.
The family thanks the caregivers at Mustang Creek Estates-Sachse, and Arabella Palliative & Hospice Care, for their loving care and support for Susan over the last few years.
Susan will be laid to rest July 15, 2024, at Rest Haven Cemetery in Rockwall, Texas.
