Stinson James Miller, Retired

January 23, 1935 — May 9, 2019

Major Stinson James Miller, Retired, 84, passed away peacefully May 9, 2019.

Jim was born January 23, 1935 in Oakland, CA to Gladys and Wayne Miller, who have preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Orpha Burke; son Kerry James Miller; daughter Rene Findley; grandson Matthew Montgomery and wife Megan; granddaughter Nicole Montgomery-Smith and spouse Jordan Smith; grandson James Findley and fiance Caitlin Murray; great-granddaughter Dylan Smith; brother Gene Miller and wife Jackie; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jim was a man of many accomplishments. He joined the U.S. Army in 1957 as a private, and retired 20 years later as a Major. Jim served two tours in Vietnam. He graduated from the University of Nebraska, Omaha at age 37. Jim and Orpha loved Rving, and traveled for months at a time, making the most wonderful friends along the way.

Jim was a Master level US track and Field official, and officiated at many high school and college events, Senior Olympics, and the Olympic Trials in Sacramento, CA in 2000.

Jim was a familiar sight in Wylie, either walking or biking for miles. At 83, he was still biking 15-20 miles at a time. He ran in the Marine Corps Marathon and the New York Marathon, along with his best friend Regis Harkins of Virginia. He participated every year at the Sachse Turkey Trot, always receiving a medal - not as the fastest walker, but the oldest.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend. Jim will be missed by everyone who knew him.
