Stephen K. Hatchel was born in Dallas, Texas, May 1, 1942 to Eldon and Helen Hatchel. He graduated from Samuel High School in Dallas. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy. After service in the Navy, he met Ginger Glover, who would later become his wife in January 1966. He joined the Dallas Police Department as an officer and investigator. He completed a degree in Criminal Justice from Abilene Christian University in 1977. He retired in 1992. After retirement, he owned a small security business for 20 years. He worked as a bailiff for the Dallas Sheriff's department until his diagnosis with cancer. He was a member, deacon, and Bible Study teacher at Meadows Baptist Church, Plano, and First Baptist Church, McKinney.
He is survived by his wife, of 48 years, Ginger, two sons, Boyd (Richmond) and Aaron (Allen), daughter's-in-law, Jennie and Ana, and six grandchildren, Mallory, Miles, Madison, Mason, Jacob, and Garrett. He is survived by his brothers Pat (Euless) and Michael (Irving) and their families. He is preceded in death by his sister, Gwendolyn Kidd.
