Shirley Permenter Stockwell, our loving mom and grandmother, departed this life to be in the heavenly presence of Jesus on January 5, 2022.
Shirley was born on June 1, 1935 in Center, Texas to parents Annie Mae Kimbro Permenter and Claude Oliver Permenter, Sr. She grew up there in East Texas and later moved to Dallas where she graduated from Pleasant Grove High School. Always a fashionable person, Shirley was voted "Best Dressed" by her high school classmates.
Later, Shirley attended Southern Methodist University and then pursued other interests. She met her husband of 50 years, Marvin Stockwell, at Texaco Corporation where they both worked. They married, had their daughter Cindy, and lived in Plano, Texas for fifteen years. Shirley also worked for Republic National Life Insurance during this time.
Shirley and Marvin later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, living there for twenty years. Shirley then worked for Silvey Insurance and was a member of the National Association of Insurance Women. She and her co-workers, including her best friend Julene Shoun, traveled to annual conventions in various cities across the U.S. After the conventions they would plan wonderful vacations, cruising and traveling to Paris, London, Vancouver, and Hawaii. Shirley's favorite places included the Palace of Versailles, Shakespeare's home, Butchart Gardens, and of course the beautiful beaches of Hawaii.
After retirement, Shirley and Marvin moved back to Garland, Texas to fully enjoy being grandparents. They attended multiple theater productions, choir concerts, and football games in this pursuit. Shirley was a shopper extraordinaire and excelled at giving gifts. She was fondly nick-named "Shirley-Claus." She was a fashionista and "Best-Dressed" all throughout her life.
Shirley is survived by her daughter Cindy McConnell, son-in-law Gordon McConnell, grandchildren Andrew Philip, Abbie Joy, and Joel Luke McConnell, loving sister Anna Faye Thornton, sister-in-law Genell Permenter, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Marvin Earl Stockwell, parents C.O. and Annie Permenter, and brothers C.O., O.E., and Billy Permenter.
Shirley (also known as "Mimi") and her spirited personality will be greatly missed. We appreciate all of her love and support that she gave to us throughout her life. We are sure she is enjoying a heavenly reunion with her mom, husband Marvin, and their beloved poodle, Gigi.
A graveside service celebrating Shirley's life and move to heaven will be held at Grove Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Dallas, Texas at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 10, 2022
