Shirley Jean McKinney, 77, resident of Mesquite, TX, passed peacefully on Monday March 16, 2020, with her loving husband by her side. She was born in Greenville, Tx on April 23, 1942. She was one of two children of Frank and Irene Loftis. Shirley grew up in Garland, TX and attended Garland High School, where she eventually retired from after 28 years of service.
Shirley married Charles McKinney of Garland on July 31, 1959. Shirley embarked on a life as a housewife and mother while Charles pursued a career in law enforcement. She continued her life as a devoted wife and mother. Later she was employed as a secretary and an accountant at Garland High School.
Her devotion to her family and faith became her passion. She was a longtime member of Saturn Road Church of Christ after serving for years at Austin St Church of Christ. She taught Sunday classes, led bible studies, and served in other capacities.
Once retired she continued her commitment to her family by attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's events. She was notorious for throwing and attending get-togethers with her ladies' bible class, dinner clubs, and husband's Sheriff's Association. She maintained that life while enduring numerous chronic illnesses and pain. Along with her strongest supporter Charles, she continued the good fight through the end while still supporting her family and friends.
Shirley is survived by husband; Charles McKinney; son Curtis McKinney and husband Keith Kosler; daughters; Dawn Smithey and husband Scott; and Donna Fischer and husband Greg; grandchildren; David Smithey and wife Amanda; Austin Smithey and wife Cassie; Brad Smithey and fiance Bethany; Morgan Kostich and husband Nicholas; and Grant Fischer; great-grandchildren; Rachel, Leah, Jace, and Layla Smithey; and Kash and Kason Kostich. Shirley is also survived by sister; Wanda Kay Corso.
