Russell Lynn Bates passed away on September 12, 2020 at the age of 86. Russell was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather as well as a fun-loving
friend and neighbor.
Russell was born in Pilot Point, TX on May 15, 1934 to Ambrus Russell Bates and Hattie Mae Smith. He grew up in Tioga, TX and worked at Collins Radio in Dallas as a draftsman before opening his own business, Plano Guttering Company, which was successful for over 30 years until his retirement to the beautiful yellow house that he and his wife Delia "Dee" Hoskins built in McKinney, TX. Russell and Dee married on May 16, 1963 and enjoyed a wonderful 43 years together before her death in 2006.
Russell was a skilled artist who loved drawing cartoon characters. He enjoyed fishing, bird hunting, and playing poker and 42. Any day spent storytelling with
friends was a good day for Russell. He was known for his sense of humor and tendency to always speaking his mind.
He is survived by four children: son Larry Bates, daughter Debra Bush, daughter Diana Lee, and son Buddy Bates as well as four grandchildren: Thomas, Jason, Kate
and Calvin; and four great grandchildren Joseph, Alonna, Andrew and Kourtni.
Heaven got a good ol' cowboy today!
Visitation will be Thursday, September 17th from 6:00pm -8:00pm at Charles W. Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 601 S. Tennessee St, McKinney TX 75069.
Graveside services will be Friday, September 18th at 10:00am at Fitzhugh Cemetery, 2540 Country Club Rd, Lucas TX 75002.
