Dear Colleagues:

Another of our long-term pastors has died. Saturday, May 25, the Rev. Roy Talmadge Sherrod, Jr. died in Dallas after serving faithfully as a member of Grace Presbytery or its predecessors for 62 years. Roy was born in Johnson City TN on November 8, 1922, and reared in Knoxville. An Eagle Scout, he was chaplain of his troop through which came his Call to ministry. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he was elected Torchbearer and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Roy attended what is now Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, VA where he earned his B.D. and Th.M. degrees. He did postgraduate studies at the Institute of Pastoral Care in Boston and Summer Institutes in Rome, Scotland Sweden and Switzerland.

East Hanover Presbytery ordained him August 28, 1946, to serve as pastor of Sandston Presbyterian Church in Virginia. In the spring of 1951, Roy was received into this Presbytery (then Central Texas Presbytery) to begin a six year pastorate at Westminster Church in Austin. Then he began a twenty-four year pastorate at First Presbyterian Church in Waco. After service as pastor in the Casa Linda Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Roy began a series of interim pastorates that included First Presbyterian Churches in Wichita Falls, Kilgore, and Grapevine, and NorthPark and Westminster, Dallas. He also served as interim pastor at White Memorial Church in Raleigh, NC and as interim associate pastor at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock.

One member of one of these churches wrote in evaluation: "As the second "half" of his interim pastorate began, Roy helped the congregation through some difficult problems with discretion and strong leadership. He also shifted his main focus to preparing the Congregation for its new pastor through some administrative changes, several well-written newsletter communications, and his sermons."

Roy served as moderator of two presbyteries and on the boards at MoRanch, Presbyterian Children's Home and Presbyterian Village North. He also served Austin College as Director of Church Relations. He was a member of the General Assembly Mission Board, its Investment Committee and Theological Education Fund, and was a board member of Presbyterian Publishing House.

His wife, Mary Hines was always a strong supporter to Roy in his ministry. Together they led tours to Oberramagau and Israel. We shall miss the energetic ministry of our colleague.

Roy leaves for our Christian care and concern his wife, Mary Hines (Beard) Sherrod; their four children: Bill, Chris, Jeffrey and Susan, and eleven grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, in the Sanctuary of the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas.

Sincerely,
The Rev. Dr. Fred A. Ryle, Jr., H. R.
On behalf of the Pastoral Care Team of Grace Presbytery
