Roy LaVerne Dickson

May 15, 1931 — April 9, 2017

Roy LaVerne Dickson was born on May 15, 1931, the last child to Spanish War Veteran George Mc Courter Dickson and Ethel May (Viers) at Fort Dodge, Kansas. He graduated El Dorado High School in 1950 and received his BA degree from Wichita State University. Services will be Friday, April 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the Charles W. Smith Funeral home in Sachse, TX. Burial will be in El Dorado, KS.


Roy married Dixie Lee Harper on June 3, 1956 in the same church of his family memorial will be held in El Dorado, Kansas. He always looked forward to their 60th wedding anniversary and did so last summer. He was the life of the party.


Roy served in Navy during the Korean War. He, his Dad and his seven brothers were in the military and saw active duty and all came home. His is a patriotic member of the American Legion Post 81 of El Dorado, KS. He was also a member of the Retired Teachers of Kansas, El Dorado Senior Center, Laurie Schwenk Senior Activity Center of Sachse, TX.


Roy was a master educator to several hundred 5th and 6th grade students over 37 years. He was admired and respected by his students that invited him to their weddings as they reached adulthood. He was the kindest, most gentle man in the world with students and people in general. He lived by his mother’s teachings – “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” Roy never judged a person by their skin, creed or gender. He loved body building and after he retired from teaching in 1990, he managed several fitness centers and competed in Senior Body-Building Competitions. He loved his family dearly and was always there to rock a baby to sleep, toss a ball, read a story or do a math problem.


Roy is survived by his devoted wife, Dixie of Sachse, TX; son, Daniel of Wichita, KS; daughter, Angela of Sachse, TX; Foster daughter, Angelita Pena of Sachse, TX; brother, Bill M. Dickson of Gilbert, AZ; sisters-in-law, Frances Dickson and Sharon Dickson of El Dorado, KS. Grandchildren Kayla of Conroe, TX; Danica of El Dorado, KS; Angel, Nicole, Luke, Mitchell of Wichita, KS, and Megan of Sioux City, IA.; 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents, sons, Mathew, Marcus, Lucas, and Jonathan; sisters, Lola Mary Sanstra and Elsie Mae Stewart; brothers, John Marion, George M. Jr., Raymond M., Wilson M, James M, and Jack M; great-grand-daughter, Lillian James.


In lieu of flowers the family requests donation go to the Laurie Schwenk Senior Activity Center, 3815 Sachse Road, Building ‘A’, Sachse, TX 75048 where he was a very active member.
