Richard Marlin Spurger

Richard Marlin Spurger passed away unexpectedly in Garland, Texas, on July 6, 2016 at the age of 72.


Richard is survived by his son, Robert Spurger and wife, Veronica Spurger, of Garland, Texas; his daughter, Belinda Cabezuela and husband, Joe Cabezuela of Sachse, Texas; his daughter, Anita Carrasco and husband, Ruben Carrasco of Lucas, Texas; and his daughter, Kimberly Salyards and husband, Santino Salyards of Plano, Texas, as well as their mother, Lien Spurger; five grandchildren, Valerie Spurger, Colin Cabezuela, Cole Spurger, Reece Carrasco, and Reagan Carrasco; and three great grandchildren, Jaelynn Romero, Xavier Sanchez, and Isaiah Sanchez; along with many friends and family in Birmingham, Alabama.


Richard was born on June 18, 1944 in Fairfield, Alabama, to Robert E. Spurger and Barbara Spurger. Richard served in the United States Army as a combat medic from 1965 to 1972 in the Vietnam War. He was actively involved in the local chapter of the VFW and spent many of his days socializing with local veterans at the VA Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He spent his days prior to retirement self-employed with his roofing company, Kimberly Roofing. He will be most remembered for his sense of humor and his love of playing poker with his family. His hobbies included reading and he loved watching documentaries and horror movies.


A funeral is scheduled for Sunday, July 10, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. at Charles W. Smith & Sons Funeral Home in Sachse, Texas, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Richard’s life. Flowers and condolences may be sent to Charles W. Smith & Sons Funeral Home.
