Rhonda Ann Mullen

August 27, 1942 — June 13, 2024

Nevada

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Rhonda Ann Mullen, who peacefully left this earth on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at the age of 81. She was born August 27, 1942 in Gladewater, Texas to Tommie and Erma Randolph. In 1955 her family moved to Garland, where she met many lifelong friends. She graduated from Garland High School in 1960.

Rhonda started her career in the health care field, but her charm and outgoing personality quickly drew her to sales. She traveled to state fairs and conventions all over the country, selling various items such as greeting cards, massage units, floral arrangements, and even her own line of shorts called Roni Wraps. If she believed in a product, she could sell it! She was most proud of owning a small business called Adjustable Beds of Texas, which she successfully operated for over 10 years. She then returned to the health care field and served as Admissions Coordinator at a local rehab facility, where she retired at the age of 74.

Rhonda was one of the founding members of the GHS Alumni Association and was on the planning committee for each of her class reunions. In her spare time, she enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and working jigsaw puzzles, but her happy place was in the kitchen! Boy, could she cook! She often delivered home-cooked meals to those who were ill, in need, or sometimes "just because". Several years ago, she compiled a family cookbook, which will live on for many years to come.

Rhonda's absolute world was her family! She loved attending her grandsons' ball games and school events, and while they were in college, gifted them with a Study Abroad experience. When she hosted family get-togethers, everyone was sure to leave with great memories. Her mother-daughter trips were always full of adventure; however, her favorite trips were to Gladewater for lunch with cousins, a tour of her old stomping grounds, and a stop at the family cemetery.

Rhonda always strived to make the world a better place. When she and a friend discovered numerous cancers and other diseases in their neighborhood, they spent countless hours (and years) gathering data, doing research, and pleading their case to the EPA and TCEQ. She was so relieved when their voices were finally heard, knowing that many young lives would be saved. She loved everyone unconditionally, regardless of their nationality, skin color, or lifestyle. She’ll be remembered for her kind heart and positive attitude, which she maintained to the very end.

Rhonda (aka "Mas") is survived by her children Robert Bryan Shaw (Jan) and Cindy Dorough (Tim); grandsons Travis Dorough (Ashlyn) and Dylan Dorough (Samantha), and great-grandson Colton Shaw. Also, together with their families, sister Linda Speegle and cousins Tommy Phillips, Clifford Phillips, Anita Phillips (deceased), Erma Hill, and Michael Phillips. She also leaves behind four bonus grands and 9 bonus greats! And finally, the children of Harry and Stepheny Wilbur: Jennifer, Jessica, Brian and Rusty, whom she loved as her own.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Corey Shaw, and niece Lisa Speegle.

Many thanks to the caring staff at New Haven Assisted Living and Concho Hearts Hospice, who loved her and treated her like family. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to GHS Alumni Association, PO Box 400, Wylie, TX 75098, which will be used for well-deserved scholarships.
