Patricia Doyle Polk

July 14, 1926 — October 1, 2011

Patricia Doyle Polk, a long-time resident of the Dallas/Fort Worth area, died Saturday, October 1, 2011 in Dallas at the age of 85. Patricia was a devoted mother, grandmother, daughter and teacher who cared about and wanted to be of help to others.

Born in 1926 in Dallas, Texas, Patricia received a B.A. from Texas State College for Women (now Texas Woman’s University) in 1947. She continued her education at Texas Christian University, from which she received her M.A. in 1968. She taught in public schools in Port Arthur and Midland, Texas and Seattle, Washington and later in the Crowley, Texas public school system for 16 years prior to her retirement in 1988. Patricia was also one of the first teachers at the well-regarded Starpoint School for children with learning difficulties at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, from 1966 to 1972. She co-authored the CODE 78 Reading programs.

Patricia leaves her beloved husband of 57 years, Isaac Newton Polk, Jr. They were married in 1954 in Dallas and lived in Caracas, Venezuela for the first six years of their marriage. In 1960 Patricia and her family moved back to the U.S. and lived in Sunnyvale and Palo Alto, California for three years. Feeling the pull to return to roots and family, Patricia and Isaac moved back to Texas, to Fort Worth in 1963, where they lived for over 40 years. Once retired, Patricia and Isaac traveled extensively in the U.S. and Europe. They were members of Westcliff United Methodist Church (now Arborlawn United Methodist Church) and greatly enjoyed their Sunday School class and friendships there. They moved to Dallas in early 2006 to be closer to their daughter, Nancy.

Patricia is also survived by a son, Randolph Polk, daughter-in-law Cecilia Ruales Polk, grandson Matthew Polk, of Little Rock, Arkansas, daughter Nancy Polk and her life partner, Jan Harmon, of Dallas, as well as several cousins and beloved members of the Ruales family.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. A private burial will be held at Restland Cemetery in Dallas.
