Pacita M. Cano passed away peacefully at 89 on Tuesday, April 26th, 2022, in McKinney, TX. She was loved and surrounded by her family and friends in the comfort of her home.
She was predeceased by her parents, Alfonso & Marta; her siblings Corazon, Temotea, Rufina, and Jack; her husband Victorino; and her son Nazareth.
Pacita is survived by her daughter Arleen; daughter-in-law Lynne; her siblings Nena, Tony, Nita, Joey (Rosa), Roger, and Geny; her grandchildren Angel (Neng), Miles (Ton), Raiza, Reedell, Cindy, Norman, Nigel, Tin, Ima, Naz, Aaron, and Michael; her great-grandchildren Christopher, Alexander, Sam, Ennyl, Alfi, Chris, Tristan; and many nieces and nephews.
Pacita M. Cano was born on March 12th, 1933, in Manila, Philippines. She loved to cook for her family, friends, and neighbors and is known for making the best "lumpia," or egg rolls. She has created and cooked tens of thousands of lumpia, among other Filipino dishes.
Although she sacrificed her formal education to care for her family, she attended culinary classes and workshops to fine-tune her techniques and expand her original recipes. Aside from cooking, Pacita enjoyed sewing and was quite handy, and loved fixing things around the house. She loved hosting get-togethers and had a catering business for many years.
Pacita met her sweetheart Victorino in Manilla at her family's small shop, where they sold different kinds of food and knick-knacks. Victorino was making a delivery to her shop, and the rest is history! In 1960, Pacita married Victorino, who became an educator, and shortly after, they had two children, Arleen and Nazareth.
After 38 years of marriage, Pacita became a widow when Victorino passed away. Pacita continued her role as the matriarch of the family and was a loving and devoted grandparent who spent her entire life raising her grandchildren. She was hospitable, generous, and sweet but quite disciplined, and she did her best to instill these same qualities in her grandchildren. Pacita's home was inviting, and she opened her doors to any family that needed a place to stay; this is a testament to her kindness and willingness to serve her family. Guests to her home were treated to delicious homemade food and snacks, and she was always willing to share her love of cooking with anyone that wanted to learn.
In 2013, Pacita immigrated to the U.S., where she spent much of her time with her family in Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware, and Texas. She also traveled back and forth from Las Vegas to McKinney to spend quality time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and continued to show her love for them through wonderfully prepared meals. She spent a lot of time with her siblings in their kitchens, concocting delicious Filipino dishes and reminiscing about their life back home. Serving her family was indeed her love language! She continued to cook and care for her family over the years and into her 80s.
In 2020, Pacita relocated to McKinney to be with her granddaughter Angel and Angel's husband Neng, who dedicated their time to caring for her. It marked the beginning of Pacita's journey with dementia. The following two years proved to be the most challenging for Pacita as she began losing her memory and motor skills, and she would no longer be able to cook– the one thing she knew how to do best. Despite her challenges, Pacita continued to show her resilience and zest for life. Although her memory had begun to fail, she kept her family firmly in her heart.
Pacita leaves behind a legacy of love and service to her family and has blessed many who knew her. She has visited many places in her life, but the place she felt most at home was in the kitchen, preparing restaurant-worthy and comforting foods for her family. She will be dearly missed and will forever be in our hearts.
A memorial service for Pacita will take place on Saturday, May 21st, 2022, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2906 N. Hardin Blvd, McKinney, TX, @ 3:00 PM.
A private graveside service for Pacita will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, 5061 Harding Hwy, Mays Landing, New Jersey.
