Nellie Alice Rogers-Capron-Hoff

October 7, 1918 — June 1, 2019

Nellie Alice Rogers Capron Hoff, 100, was born on October 7, 1918 in Fairview, Kansas to Charles and Ethyl (Cyphers) Rogers. She was the middle of 7 children and the youngest daughter. Her nickname from her father was "little chick". Many of you may know her as "Dutch", a name given to her early on by her eldest grand-daughter in 1972.

After losing both parents during her school years, she graduated from Fairview High School in 1936 and went on to attend Highland Community College receiving a degree in education. Nellie was the only one of her siblings to obtain a college degree. During this time, she also worked with Brown County Social Services and went on to teach for several years in a one room country school house.

In 1942, Nellie enlisted to serve in WWII joining the Women's Marine Reserve. Based at Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune in North Carolina,
she was selected for officer's training school and commissioned to Second Lieutenant. Following the war, she was active in the American Legion and worked at the Veteran's Administration Center in Wichita Kansas. It was there that Nellie met and married Warren B. Capron in 1948. Together they had only one child, Carolanne. In 1956, Nellie lost Warren due to an automobile accident. She then returned to Wichita University to complete a bachelor and master's degree in education while also teaching at Christopher Rankin, a private school, which would eventually be known as Wichita Collegiate School.

In 1974, Nellie married Eryll Hoff and they lived in Wellington, Kansas until his death. She returned to Wichita as she finished her final years of teaching. In 1983, she retired from teaching 1st grade having served those final years as Dean of the Lower School.

Following retirement, Nellie moved to Garland, Texas to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren and was very active with them through her life. In 1999, she moved to Sachse, Texas to live across the street from her three great-grandsons whom she helped care for from infancy. She also helped care for her eldest great-granddaughter when she was born in 2005. She loved every minute she spent with all of them.

Nellie was active in the Sachse senior center and Epiphany Episcopal Church and eventually joined St. Barnabas Episcopal church. In 2005, she moved in with her daughter and her husband, living with them until January of this year.

She is proceeded in death by her parents, Charles and Ethyl Rogers; sister, Arvilla Chrisenberry; and brothers Darwin, Myron, Lyle, Lowell and Lloyd Rogers; husbands, Warren Capron and Eryll Hoff.
