Naomi Reed

Naomi Lee Reed, 93, passed away January 4, 2021, at her home in Fairview, Texas, surrounded by her family. She was born February 26, 1927, in Naples, Texas, daughter of W. E. and Pearl Ballard, and the youngest of six children. Naomi moved to Dallas in the early 1940s with her sisters and rode the streetcar to work in Downtown. She married Devon Reed, Sr., after he returned from serving in World War II. Naomi entered the work force and became one of the first women purchasing agents in Dallas. She worked for numerous companies throughout her life and once opened a fashion boutique. During retirement, Naomi and Devon delivered new cars all over the United States for car dealerships.

Naomi and Devon raised their two children in Dallas, and they moved to Sachse in 1967, where they resided until 1999, when they relocated to Garland. After Devon's passing in 2006, Naomi remained in Garland until she moved to Fairview in 2014. Naomi was actively involved in her community throughout her entire life, serving as president in dozens of clubs and organizations. She began her volunteer work with Preschool PTA, ultimately being awarded a lifetime membership. She enjoyed being a Cub Scout Den Mother, Sunday School Teacher, and President of the United Methodist Women. She led the Auxiliary for the Sachse Volunteer Fire Department and helped organize the Sachse Historical Society. She served on the Board of the Garland Federation of Women's Clubs for many years, where she was awarded the most outstanding Club Woman of the Year. Naomi started a chapter of Phi Sigma Alpha sorority, where she again served as President for many years. She joined the Les Fleurs Garden Club in Garland, and enjoyed it so much that she started the Fleur de Lis Garden Club in Sachse.

Her most fulfilling and rewarding volunteer work occurred in hospitals, including the VA Hospital in Dallas, the Garland Community Hospital, and Baylor Garland Hospital, where she accumulated over 8,000 volunteer hours. She also served on the Texas State Board for the Hospital Auxiliaries. Naomi was a patriotic American, leaving a legacy to her family of her deep love of her country. She joined the VFW Auxiliary, Post 5076, in the 1970's, where she received numerous local and state awards over many decades for her leadership roles. Naomi and her friends loved wearing hats and spent twenty years meeting at tea rooms as part of the appropriately-named, Chit Chat Hat Club. Naomi and Devon were lifelong members of the Methodist Church, including many years at the Pleasant Mount United Methodist Church, then the First United Methodist Church of Garland, and most recently Naomi joined Creekwood United Methodist Church in Allen.

Naomi is survived by her daughter, Glenda Rae Terry and husband Steven of Fairview; daughter-in-law Vickie Reed Volkers and husband Steve of Mesquite; grandchildren: Lisa Reed Winn and husband Marty of Mesquite; Lauri Reed Cole and husband Chad of Waco; Jennifer Reed DeBoer and husband Corey of Fort Worth; Bryce Terry and wife Holli of Lavon; Celena Terry Adcock and husband Jeff of Allen; 17 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Naomi was affectionately called NeeNaw by her family. Her beloved husband, Devon Reed, Sr., and beloved son, Devon Reed, Jr., preceded her in death in 2005 and 2006. Naomi loved and adored her husband and family above all. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a proud grandmother, a caring daughter, a true friend, a devout Christian, an avid gardener, a true leader, an amazing cook, a selfless volunteer, and a helper for anyone in need.

Naomi especially loved butterflies, which are a symbol of transformation and a representation of the splendor, magnificence, and spiritual intricacies of life.

Services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2021, at Creekwood United Methodist Church, 261 Country Club Road, Allen, Texas 75002.

Reverend David Lessner and Reverend Wendy McConney officiating. Interment will follow in Restland Memorial Park, Dallas, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to First United Methodist Church of Garland, Creekwood United Methodist Church, or Sachse Historical Society.
