Mateo Ramos

September 21, 1911 — June 19, 2013

Mateo S. Ramos born Sept 21, 1911 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Jacobo and Severiana Ramos passed away peacefully on June 19, 2013. He lived a long life of 101 yrs.
Dad was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 59 yrs. Concha G. Ramos.
In his early years and throughout his life dad was a hard worker. From delivering wood with Fedencio Luna to Maria's oven so she could make tortillas, to picking cotton and crops as a young man. That led him to different parts of the country, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Illinois to name a few. Chicago was his favorite. It was here that dad frequented the same Speakeasy's and walked the same streets as Al Capone and other notorious gangsters. Dad lived up North for a few years before coming back to Dallas. Once back, dad had an array of odd jobs that included laying the bricks to what are now the streets of Downtown Dallas to helping build the White Rock Spillway. He was also a courier and a Taxi driver for Checker cab. He retired in 1976 from SMU after being there for almost 20 yrs. as head custodian. After his retirement dad continued to hold part-time jobs just to keep busy and stay out of moms' way.
Dad's free time was spent doing things he loved. Dad loved the nightlife. Having sung and danced at some of the best nightclubs during this era. Going to formal dances like the "Black and Whites" at local ballrooms like the HI-Ho, Palladium and the Fairmont Hotel was how he like to spend his Saturday nights. It was during this time that dad met and married mom in 1952. It was also during this time that dad developed his love of Golf. Dad played in minor league tournaments that took him to San Antonio, Houston, and Amarillo and other Texas cities. It was around this time that dad met golf newcomer Lee Trevino. They became friends and caddied together at local country clubs.
Dad led a modest life, tinkering with his golf clubs or cleaning the spark plugs in his car, this is what you could always find him doing. He loved going to drive-in movies and going to eat burgers at Here Tis', Dairy Queen and later on at McDonalds. Dad loved to just drive around town. On occasion we would cruise Highland Park just looking at all the pretty homes Dad was our very first driving instructor. Dad also loved going to segundas, pulgas and hitting balls at Stevens and Tennison golf courses. On weekends though, he could be found at one of his brother or sisters houses.
As dad got along in years his loved turned to his grand-kids. Taking and picking them up from school, taking them to get haircuts or to the little store around the corner, surprising them with ice-cream, donuts, hamburgers or a dollar or two were what he loved doing.
As he reached his Golden years it was just him and his beloved. They spent their time reading the Bible, watching oldies but goodies on TV, or just talking about the "good ole days!" Memories...he had a few.
