Margie Poeck Best Henry, 85, of Plano, TX entered her heavenly home on Sunday, October 27, 2024 after a brief illness.
Margie was born at home in her beloved Honey Grove (Allen’s Chapel), TX on August 14, 1939 to parents William and Marguerite Poeck. She was born again as a child of God in the waters of Holy Baptism on September 10, 1939 and catechized in the Christian faith and confirmed on March 29, 1953.
After her parents moved the family to Dallas, she spent as much time as she could in Honey Grove with her grandparents and cousins. Those were her happiest memories. She graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas, TX in 1957. Always told she would be unable to bear children, she followed her dream of becoming a teacher and attended the University of Texas at Austin for one semester before becoming so ill that the college sent her home. She went to work at the Dallas Times Herald where she met and married Jerry Wolfe and together they had two children, William and Jill. Following that brief marriage she married Tommy Best and together they had Robin. She always said her children were her greatest joy and blessing because she had always believed she would not be able to become a mother.
Margie had a simple life due to her inability to drive because of persistent panic attacks. She accepted her limitations and reveled in what she had. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was most often in the kitchen cooking her family’s favorites of fried chicken and potato salad, pot roast every Sunday, chocolate chip cookies, home-made German chocolate cake and many pans of fudge at Christmas which was always in much demand. Working most of her life as a receptionist, she filled the need to teach by being a Sunday School teacher for 30 years. She was always in her bedroom on Saturday afternoons preparing each lesson and making story boards with felt figures so she could engage the children in active Bible story retelling. Her children’s greatest gift was having a mother who shared her faith in Christ, making certain we were in church every week and modeling her faith with her language and actions. Over the years she wore through more Bibles than could be counted and even in the nursing home where she lived the last 2 years of her life, the Bible was her main reading material. She had a lifelong love of reading and taught her children to make good use of the public library. Even after becoming legally blind she somehow managed to pour through many books and Bibles.
Late in life she married William Henry and for a short time they were able to take some train trips and see parts of the country she had never seen. Margie had many illnesses the doctors couldn’t diagnose, and suffered through the last 20 years of life with battles with eye issues, hip replacements, 2 bouts of cancer, radiation, neuropathy, and more. No longer able to walk, she went to live at Carrara long term care in 2022 and was there until her death. The aids and nurses especially liked Margie because she didn’t complain even when she should and she was always worried they were working too hard and didn’t want to bother them. She enjoyed many faithful visitors in her time there especially visits from her children, sisters, grandchildren, nieces and Pastor Taylor, with special Christmas caroling by the church youth which was widely enjoyed by all of the residents and staff alike.
She was preceded in death by husband William Henry and parents, William and Marguerite Poeck.
Survivors include children William (Wanda) Best, Jill (Jerry) Taylor, Robin (Todd) Hauth, sisters Sharon (Jerrell) Sandling, Linda (Rick) Frei, grandchildren Sarah (Greg) Taylor, Ryan Best, Emily Best, Sydney Best, Jeremy (Catie) Taylor, Jonathan (Samay) Taylor, Jennifer (Joey Cuervo) Kohlnhoffer, Emily (Louis) Villanueva, great grandchildren Colton, Kolbi, Ellie, Dakota, Liberty, Alexander, Kennedy, Beckham, Stella and Isabel, nieces Amy (Ben) Crawford and Melissa (Jeff) Jones, and lifelong best friend Jeanette Ayres.
