Lucille C. Young, 89, of Garland, TX, was called home Friday, March 22, 2013.
Born at home in Florence Co., SC, the daughter of the late Willard S. Cockfield and late Sadie Marie Graham.
She married the late Arthur B. Young in 1956, and they lived in rural Florence Co., SC until 1961 when Arthur Young took a position as a mathematics teacher at Latta High School in Latta, SC. After retirement, they relocated to Garland, TX in 1988.
Lucille helped with her father's farm until moving to Latta, SC. There she worked as a teacher's aid for handicapped children in the Dillon County School System, served as a Girl Scout leader running Girl Scout District services for Latta, and managed a high end retail store including alterations services. She loved flowers, particularly violets, and entered some of her hybrids in a Violet Society's show. She had many hobbies and talents, including cooking, sewing, quilting, tatting, crocheting, and macrimeting. Lucille made her own prom dress, Melanie's wedding dress, and numerous props and costumes. She was once even called upon to help create Miss South Carolina competition gowns for the Miss America pagent. While in Latta, she participated in numerous potlucks, fund raisers, and Women's circles of the Latta Methodist Church, later Latta United Methodist Church. While in Garland, she taught Sunday School most of a decade and facilitated VBS for numerous summers. She had an unusual amount of patience and compassion, particularly for children.
She is survived by two daughters: Kate of SC and Melanie of TX; five grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and one step-daughter (Gwen of AL); 4 step-grandchildren; and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years; and all her siblings: brothers Harry, W. and Clinton Cockfield and sister Lillian Wise.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 19, 2013 at St. Philips United Methodist Church in Garland, TX, following the regular service.
