Louis Karl Breuer was born July 17, 1923 in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. He passed September 22, 2011.
A former air force pilot, he served a total of 26 years in regular and reserve assignments beginning in World War II. During his career he was twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was awarded the Air Medal on 16 occasions. He also held the Air Force Commendation medal and the French Croix de Guerre. In 1953, the General James Doolittle committee commended Mr. Breuer for his "distinguished service to aviation". He attained the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Mr. Breuer attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he majored in journalism. He worked a number of years as a reporter and columnist for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. His column was called "The Prop Wash". He was the son-in-law of the late Ray Anderson, Farm Editor of the Gazette for many years.
He relocated to Texas in 1959. At the time of his retirement in 1991, Mr. Breuer was president of General Exploration Company, a Dallas-based coal mining company with operations in Ohio, Kentucky and Colorado.
Mr. Breuer was a member of the Collin County Sheriff’s Reserve for 11 years and a member of the founders committee of Collin County Community College. He also held memberships in the Air force Association, the Thunderbolt Pilots Association, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Caterpillar Club, a fraternity of individuals whose lives were saved by a parachute jump.
He was an avid sports fan, a sponsor of the Golden Gloves, and coached little league baseball and football.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, former Elizabeth (Betty) Anderson; two daughters, LouEllen McMillian and Teresa Fararro; a son, John; four grandchildren, Sara Hall, Melissa Breuer, Jason and Katelyn Fararro; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Emily and Zoey. He was preceded in death by eldest son, Louis Karl IV, brother, John and sister, Bernice. He was a devout Christian and a member of St. Anthony Church in Wylie, Texas.
He was a husband, a father, a brother, a friend, a mentor and a leader and he touched many lives. He gave much and expected little. He was our rock. He will be missed.
