Dean was the beloved husband of 64 years to Audrey Mathenia, of Wylie, Texas. He was a dear father to his loving daughter, Angela Hughes, his son-in-law, Ben Hughes and a much loved grandfather to his grandsons, Dean Bennett Hughes and Noah Lewis Hughes, all of Murphy, Texas.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Thomas Mathenia and Lawrence Mathenia. Dean is survived by two brothers, Claude Mathenia and Earl Mathenia, Jr., three sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dean was raised in the bootheel of Missouri. He graduated from Charles G. Ross High School in Pemiscot County, Missouri in May of 1956. Following high school, Dean served his country in the US Army from February 1957 to February 1959, mostly in Germany.
Dean began his career with Beneficial Corporation in April of 1962 and worked in many different positions within the company until his retirement 31 years later in December of 1993. He wasn't quite ready to ride off into the sunset yet, as he began the Mathis Brothers Finance Department in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma January of 1994 and worked there until his real retirement in April 1997. He did then ride off into the sunset, in his red Jeep Wrangler, where Audrey was waiting in their new home in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida to begin their new chapter as retirees.
Dean and Audrey enjoyed the good life in Florida until February of 2013 when they relocated to Wylie, Texas to be near their daughter and her young family. They enjoyed spending many hours at the grandsons' sporting, band and school events over the years.
Dean will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, TX at a later date.
