L.E. (Chief) Lawson, Evangelist
Since retiring as Director of Evangelism for the Baptist Convention of New Mexico, Chief has been involved with the Bill Glass Prison Ministry nationally, as well as leading evangelism clinics, revivals, pulpit supply, and interim work. Prior to his twenty-one years with the Baptist Convention of New Mexico as Director of Evangelism, he served in a similar capacity for the Baptist Convention of Indiana, and before that, pastored churches in Colorado, Texas, and Oklahoma. He has also represented the Home Mission Board in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, and at the Baptist World Alliance in Tokyo, Japan. He directed crusades in the Philippines in 1980 and in England in 1983. Chief is a former high school football coach, and was listed in "Who's Who in Religion" in 1974, awarded the Distinguished Alumni Service Award at Hardin-Simmons University in 1980, President of the State Directors of Evangelism, S.B.C, in 1984, and received the Distinguished Leadership Award in 1988 by the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership.
Chief graduated from Hardin-Simmons University with a B.S in Physical Education and from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Masters Degree of Divinity.
He is survived by wife; Sue; sons; Mark Lawson, and Monty Lawson and wife Dianna; grandchildren; Shane Lawson and wife Stephanie, Tyler Lawson and wife Katie, and Cody Miles; and "Adopted Children" Rick and Dovie Moore.
Chief was preceded in death by his parents; Eual and Audra Lawson; and brothers; Eual Lawson, Jr. and Bill Lawson.
