Larry Duane Stanton, 82, was born to Thelma Johnson Stanton and Raymond Doyle Stanton on August 9, 1942, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Larry met Chann Stanton, the love of his life, through a mutual friend in the fall of 1959; they married on June 15, 1962, in Garland, Texas; Larry enjoyed life with Chann for almost 61 years before her death in May 2023, and together they raised two children, Shannon Leigh Stanton King and Shelli Lynn Stanton Pryor. Larry graduated from Garland High School in 1961. Larry trained as a draftsman and worked for Stanton Building Company until it was sold; he then worked for Bobby Abbott, Inc., as a grain storage salesman traveling all over West Texas and Oklahoma, and later in commercial construction in sales at Rowlett Concrete and as a commercial floor estimator before retirement from Lone Star Floors. Larry’s favorite "job" was the one as Daddy and Poppy. Most of the family's favorite memories of Daddy revolve around his love of hunting in Throckmorton and his love of racing, especially NASCAR and Outlaw Racing. Poppy loved telling stories to his girls and his "Rugrats." We learned about Dad's life in Iowa before he moved to Garland in the third grade. A fun fact? Larry, Shannon, and Shelli all had Mrs. Etheridge at Williams Elementary, where we learned to knit and heard all the Miss Minerva stories. When we visited Iowa as children and teenagers, we heard from Papa Fred how Daddy would repeatedly say “I, me want pie” to the neighbor, we heard Papa Fred's hand-fishing stories, used Aunt Ruth's outhouse, took baths in the huge washtub in the kitchen, and marveled over Papa Fred's massive garden. Shannon remembers learning about our Dutch heritage in Pella, IA; Shelli enjoyed watching the races with Daddy at the Outlaws Nationals in Knoxville, IA; and we both loved eating at the McDonald's Restaurant directly above the highway on the way to Iowa. We also loved the stories about Daddy’s drag racing adventures with Phil and Lowell when he was in high school. The last two years of Daddy's life hold some of the greatest memories we will cherish forever. Shelli got a new roommate, and Poppy quit smoking! Daddy made LOTS of phone calls to his girls and his Rugrats. He traveled 9 hours across The Pond to London to witness a wedding and see the sights. These are just a few of the incredible memories we created with our dad and grandfather during the last two years of his life.
Larry is survived by his children, Shannon Stanton King and her husband, Mike, and Shelli Stanton Pryor; his grandchildren, Jaret and Kali King, Trinity and Sean King, Avery King, Cassidy Cooper, Jacob Pryor, Holly Pryor, Meagan Pryor, and Courtney Pryor; and his great-grandchildren, London, Paris, Scotland, Scoutt, Charley, Tatum, Carter, and Cove. Larry is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Jeri and Mike Harrison, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Cathy and Richard Neal, nieces and nephews, Shelia and Skip Gayken and family, Kelli Harrison, Jason Harrison and family, Kevin and Jana Harrison and family, Scott and Aimee Harrison and family, and practically family friends, Phil Bush, Bob Bolton, Kirk Pryor, and Tony and Kami Blassingame and family.
