Larry D Mitchell

February 1, 1941 — March 10, 2020

Larry Douglas Mitchell was born February 1, 1941 in Greenville, TX and passed away on March 10, 2020 in Sachse, TX at his son's home, after a courageous yearlong battle with cancer.

He was born in Greenville, TX, moved to Garland, TX when he was 5 years old. He went to school and raised a family there before returning to his current home in Greenville in 1984. He worked at Levine's and Drug Mart in Ridgewood Shopping Center for most of his life before "retiring" to the Royse City Wal-Mart Garden Center at the age of 75. His work family was always a second family and customers were always his "friends". He coached little league and Peewee football for many years, later years helping his son coach the 6th grade Hawks, he continued to follow every player that continued to play the game at the next level. He loved working outdoors and was happiest when he could be mowing. Many times mowing his 10 acres with just a push mower. He loved to drive around seeing new and old sites, even driving 100 plus miles for lunch to try a place he read about. He was an avid reader, mostly health, travel and Christian books. He spent the last year reading the Bible twice.

His greatest love was his family, mainly those grandchildren. He never missed a holiday, school dance photo opportunity, school play, sporting events (yes even if on the volleyball bench), athletic banquet or any event he knew about. He drove every week to a college campus for a standing dinner date even when the weather was not cooperative, he just left 3 hours earlier to make it on time. Many times dressing and pushing Eula in her wheelchair even though staying home was a lot less work on his frail body. He continued that standing dinner date locally with Devon up until his final weeks.

He was THE best husband, Dad, stepfather, father-in-law, Papa, boss and friend anyone could ever hope for and we were so very lucky to have him.

Larry is survived by his son Larry D Mitchell and wife Cyndi, his daughter of 33 years. His grandson and best friend Devon Mitchell (Sydni Farrar), his granddaughter and princess Shelby Mitchell (Alden Smith), his grandson and best buddy Jake Mitchell. He was blessed with a bonus son when he married Eula that he considered his own, James Welk and wife Shaney who he also loved as a daughter. His first granddaughter who taught him how to play baby dolls Amber D (Welk) O'Grady, husband Chris and his great grandkids, Corey, Tyler and Jennifer O'Grady. His mother Tommie (Fowler) Mitchell, his brother Phil Mitchell, sisters Phyllis Buchholz and Linda Fitzgerald. His very special cousin Vonda Farmer and many other extended family members.
He is healed & rejoicing in Heaven with loved ones that include his adored wife of 56 years, Eula Mae (Stewart) who passed 12/12/2019, His birth father Jessie Frank Stephenson who was KIA on 08/02/1944 in France during WWii. His bonus dad that raised him as his own, Don Q Mitchell, brothers Bobby Mitchell and Jimmy Don Mitchell and his grandparents; George & Tommie Lucille Fowler, along with many other extended family members.
