Joseph Anthony Szot

January 10, 1924 — December 20, 2016

Joseph Szot, 92, of Dunkirk peacefully passed away in Sachse, Texas on Tuesday, December 20, 2016. He was born January 10, 1924, son of the late Sebastian and Caroline (Sikora) Szot.


A near lifelong resident of Dunkirk, he received his Catholic Elementary School Diploma in 1938 from Saint Hyacinth’s School in Dunkirk and his High School Diploma from Dunkirk High School in 1942. He served in the Army Air Force from 1943 through 1946 where he completed Pre-Engineering, Basic coursework at Baylor University in 1944 and specialized in and taught radio mechanics. CPL Szot received an Honorable Discharge and earned the WWII Victory ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and American Theater Ribbon.


He returned to Dunkirk after completing his military service and worked at ALCO, Exelco, and Roblin Steel, retiring as Roblin Steel’s superintendent of maintenance in 1986. He was an avid woodworker, gardener, photographer and videographer who enjoyed editing videos of vacation trips around the U.S. and Europe and constructing holiday yard art.


His memberships included the Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish Church of St. Hyacinth and the Moniuszko Club.


He is survived by Genevieve, his wife of over 68 years whom he married May 1, 1948; their sons, James Szot of Sachse, TX and Jeffrey Szot of Colton, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Bernice Budniewski and brother Louis.


Services are pending. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish in Dunkirk.
