JOHN FRANKLIN MCCOY, JR.

GARLAND, TX – John Franklin McCoy, Jr., 73, died December 4, 2020 at home after a long physical battle. He was born December 6, 1946 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. John graduated from Hempfield High School and following graduation, he served with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War as an interpreter. His military career started in Texas but he lived in California for many years. He met the love of his life, Lois Lane McCoy and they married in 2001 and settled in San Antonio, Texas. John did IT installation for the banking industry. After 15 years in San Antonio, John and Lois relocated to Garland, Texas to be closer to family, especially the grandchildren.

John loved to read and listen to 70's music, the kind you can sing to. He loved classic cars and he could tell you the year, make and model of any car just by looking at it. He loved to watch NASCAR and football. He became a big fan of college football and rooted for the Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama. He had it on good authority that they were a second half team! John was a great bonus dad and the best Pop Pop ever. His heart was full of love for his kids and grandkids and they brought happiness to his life.

John is survived by his wife, Lois McCoy; daughter Rebecca Leigh Gates and Armand Kasparian of Winter Garden, FL; son James Alexander Gates and his wife Rebecca Neel Gates of Farmersville, TX, grandchildren Sledge Alexander Gates and Susan Mayree Gates of Farmersville, TX.; son Shawn McCoy of Greensburg, PA. He is also survived by his sister Mary Beth Spear and her husband Tim Spear, nephew David Richey, niece Danielle Spear and niece Dionne Christenson and families; brother Robert Leighty; sister Kitty Abernathy and her husband Greg Abernathy and William Leighty and families.

A celebration of John's life will be planned in the spring of 2021, remembering the wonderful man he was and the legacy he left behind to not only his family but to all of those who knew him.
