Jean Carter

May 14, 1926 — August 21, 2015

Jean C. Carter, 89, previously of Irving, Texas, passed from this mortal life Friday, August 21, 2015 at Presbyterian Village North (PVN) in Dallas, Texas.

Jean was born May 14, 1926 in San Benito, Texas to school teachers William Silas (1895-1969) and Mae (Cardwell) (1895-1988) Cannon. She moved with her family to Dallas in 1937.

She married George Weldon Carter (1918-1980) on December 22, 1943 in Grayson County, Texas.

She is survived by her daughter, Jan and husband John Matlack of Dallas; grandchildren Gregory Matlack and wife Charla of Frisco and Scott Matlack of Plano; great-grandchildren Andrew and Connor. Also niece Karen and husband Nelson Haynie of Pilot Point; nephews Richard and wife Juanita Kirksey of Fort Worth and Gary Kirksey of Cleburne.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (divorced in 1968) and sister Nina Wood (1929-2014).

After George was discharged from his military service in 1945, he and Jean lived in Harlingen, Edinburg and Denton. In 1947 they settled in Dallas where George had taken a job as the police reporter for the Dallas Times Herald newspaper. Jean was hired by the Kroehler Furniture Company to work in their Dallas business office. She stayed with them until the facility closed in the 1980s.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, September 1st, 2015 at Oakview Baptist Church located at 1004 S. Story Rd in Irving with Pastor Jim Gerlach officiating.

At her request, Jean's cremated remains will be interred at Pecan Grove Historical Cemetery in McKinney, Texas at a later date.

They were Jean's primary support.
