James George Bogle

November 15, 1940 — November 2, 2013

James George Bogle III, "Jim," entered the world on November 15, 1940, born by midwife in the family's farmhouse in Dawson, Texas to James George Bogle, Jr. & Albuquerque Bogle.

He attended Waco High School, and then Navarro Junior College, where he met and married the love of his life, his wife of 50 years, Carol Daly Cryer, on February 15, 1963.

Jim's musical career began performing in nightclubs and concert halls in the early days of their life together, then progressed to a more formal study of music in his undergraduate work at Baylor University and graduate work at Midwestern University. He completed his doctorate in music at the University of Oklahoma in 1982, and while there established the Classical Guitar program at Texas Tech University. His tenure at Texas Tech lasted nearly 30 years, and his students have gone on to positions at universities around the world.

While not teaching, Jim's love was performing. He and Carol traveled extensively across the US and Europe, performing concerts in Mexico, Spain, Russia, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, and France. Jim's passion for music was matched only by his and Carol's love for adventure, for seeing the world, making friends, and building lasting relationships with people they met. He touched the lives of so many with his music and his zest for life.

In 2005, he retired from Texas Tech University after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease to enjoy his life with his wife, his children, and his grandson. Years later, his diagnosis was changed to progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). He lost his battle with PSP on November 2, 2013. He passed peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his family.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Lloyd Duane Bogle.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Bogle; daughter, Caryn McCarthy and her husband, Kevin; son, Brad Bogle; grandson, Colin McCarthy; and his aunt, Jeanette Brochon and her husband, James.
