Lt. Col. Issac Evan Avinger, 96, of McKinney, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on December 13, 2021. Ike was born September 4, 1925 in Brownwood, Texas to Jimmie Chester Avinger and Edna Mullins Avinger.
Ike was a 1943 graduate of Brownwood High and went on to attend Texas Tech University and the University of Texas where he graduated. Ike married Nilla Martin Avinger and had three children; Sue, Jim, and MaryAnn. Ike was a strong American patriot who served proudly in the United States Air Force for thirty-three years, including a tour of duty in Thailand during the Vietnam war. After Ike retired, he became a Math and Science teacher at Brownwood. He also served as assistant principal and a coach for the girls and boys basketball teams at Brookesmith. Most importantly, Ike was a Jesus-Man, and was led by the Holy Spirit to be a prayer warrior. Ike was pro-life and had a heart for the unborn in the fight for the sanctity of human life since the 1970's. Ike attended Waddill Baptist Church, Heritage Church of McKinney, and The Lamb of God in Greece. Ike enjoyed traveling to Greece, playing golf, and making buttermilk pies. He will always be in our hearts as the greatest husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Ike was preceded in death by his parents; Chester and Edna Avinger, sister, Jimmye Louise Avinger Pickle and son Jim Avinger.
Ike is survived by his wife, of thirty five years, Chrysanthi Avinger, his daughters; Sue Minatra (Rod), MaryAnn Minatra (Alan), his step children; Ruth Griffin (Lou), Louie, Barbara, and Angela, ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, a niece, Mary Webster (Ned), and nephew David Pickle.
