Howard Childress Light

June 16, 1932 — June 30, 2016

After a brave 16-year battle with prostate cancer, the Lord called Howard Childress Light home on Thursday, June 30th 2016. Howard was born June 16, 1932 to Herman W. Light and Myra Hart Light near Gilmer Texas. He was a middle child of eight children. After graduating from Union Hill High School, he served 4 years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as an airplane mechanic. He was stationed in California, the Philippines and at a Naval Air Station in Alaska. While visiting his sister in Dallas on leave he met his future wife of 60 years, Betty Jo Williams. After the Navy, Howard worked for the U.S. Postal service for 38 years, retiring in 1991. Howard was an avid golfer and fisherman. He especially enjoyed playing golf with his brothers and sisters. He loved the company of his friends and family. He also loved going on camping trips with his wife. He was a member of the Garland Good Sam’s Club for a number of years. However, in later years he enjoyed sitting around with his friends for coffee and working at the Friendship House at First Baptist Church of Garland, where he was a deacon-emeritus. Howard Light was preceded in death by his brothers, Drebon and Joe Bill Light, and his sisters, Annie Allen, Wanda Gregory and Imogene Light. Still living are his sisters, Mary Gage and Laverne Davis. His wife, Betty, their son, Michael, Michael’s wife Amanda and two grandchildren, Avery and Abigail, also survives him.Howard will be buried at the Dallas Veteran’s Cemetery. Because flowers are not permitted at graveside, the family requests that in lieu of flowers donations in Howard’s name should be sent to either the Friendship House at First Baptist Church of Garland or the American Cancer Society.
