Homer C. Schmidt passed away on Sunday, Feb. 5, in the presence of his wife and daughter.
Born in Schertz, TX on Jan. 3, 1931, he attended small high schools around the Houston area, graduated from SMU, and worked for Dallas Power and Light (later Texas Utilities) for 37 years, rising the level of Project Manager for the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant in Glen Rose, Tx.
A graduate of the ROTC program at SMU ( Class of 1955), he remained in the Army Reserves for over 30 years, attaining the rank of Colonel.
He participated actively as a choir member and soloist at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Dallas and he was a longtime subscriber to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra concerts.
Deeply patriotic, Col. Schmidt was active in the Military Order of World Wars and was elected that organization's Commander-in-Chief in 1996. More recently, he was especially devoted to the development of young people's leadership skills through the MOWW. For many years, he was the M.C. for the Dallas Veteran's Day Parade.
He maintained membership in the Reserve Officers Association, the American Nuclear Society, the American Society of Engineers, the U.S.
Council for Energy Awareness, and the Texas Boiler Advisory Board.
He was a beloved father of three children--Peter Schmidt and Amy Schmidt Merbler, both of Garland, and Paul Epply-Schmidt of Princeton, New Jersey--and a revered grandfather of four grandchildren, and a great-grandfather as well. Above all, he was a devoted, tender, and caring husband of 57 years to his surviving wife, Diane Hetherington Schmidt of Dallas.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday February 10 at the Cox Chapel at Highland Park Methodist Church on the SMU campus.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Texas Patriotic Education Foundation (TXPEF), 1919 Jesse Way, Corinth, TX 76210
