Born in Bonham, TX to Benson and Margaret Howell on October 13, 1948 and raised in Honey Grove, TX. Lynn went to Honey Grove High School before joining the army in 1966 serving as a medic in Vietnam. For his heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, he was awarded several military decorations including the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. After completing his service, Lynn returned back to Texas eventually residing in Dallas where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science at Dallas Baptist University. When he wasn't working, he could usually be found in the yard, fixing stuff around the house, fishing, watching a ball game, or watching the sunset over the lake. Lynn was a great storyteller with a sense of humor that kept everyone entertained.
Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Dennis Howell, nephew Robert Worley, and step-grandson, Alden Black, and briefly survived by his wife of 36 years, Joan Howell who passed on April 18, 2021 He is survived by his daughter, Melissa Howell, her husband, Jason Black, step-grandchildren Trace, Brie, and Reese Black, sisters Frances Rankin, Brenda Howell, and Glenda Amox, and his loyal companion, Josey. the fearless guard dog.
Services will be held at 1:15 pm on May 5, 2021, at the DFW National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Disabled American Veterans.
