Gwendolyn Marie Schmid went home to be with our Lord Monday, February 26, 2024, at the age of 80. She was a loving wife, mother of three wonderful sons, and grandmother who devoted her life to her Lord and her family. She was an active and committed member of First Baptist Church Garland. Gwen was born in San Antonio, Texas, September 20, 1943, to Winfield and Leota North. Gwen graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and went on to attend Baylor University. Gwen married her high school sweetheart, Jack Schmid, on June 14, 1962. Through Jack’s work they lived in San Antonio, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Houston, and Dallas again. Their 2 sons were born early in their marriage and were the love of her life. Many years later they adopted a son, Matthew, at age one, and Gwen was always proud to have “my three sons.”
Gwen was saved in 1976 in California and began to grow as a believer through women’s Bible studies and personal time in God’s word. Her husband, Jack, was saved in 1979 in San Antonio, and they both set out on a grand adventure seeking to be life witnesses for Jesus Christ. Gwen taught at two private Christian schools in San Antonio and Houston, and taught children in Sunday school for over 40 years. Gwen loved teaching her fourth grade class in Sunday School. Gwen was committed to letting Christ shine through her life actively by leading many children and adults to a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ. Gwen traveled with her husband all over the world including many mission trips to the Middle East. Gwen truly was the Proverbs 31 woman described by Solomon in the Bible, beautiful inside and out.
Gwen is survived by her loving husband of over sixty-one years, Jack; her three sons, Stephen, and his wife Beth, David, and Matthew Schmid; grandson Devon Schmid and his wife Heather, granddaughter Madison, granddaughter Stormi, and grandson Jaxx; and sister Lyn Lumberg.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in honor of Gwen to the First Baptist Church of Garland Children's Ministry.
