Gerald "Jere" Jones of Rowlett, TX passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2022 exactly three months shy of his 90th birthday. After weeks of declining health, Jere died at home of congestive heart failure with his family by his side.
He was born in Rochester, MN on May 13th, 1932 to father William Jones and mother Mary Jones. The seventh of nine children, he had some formal education but mainly worked hard on his family's farm. His work ethic and a desire to help his family and build a future led to him enlisting in the Navy at age 18. He served four years assigned most significantly on the USS Monrovia during the Korean War conflict.
At the end of his service Jere returned to Minnesota and proposed to the love of his life, Colleen "Kay" Hillestad. They married in October that same year at the little brown church in Iowa. Throughout their 58 years of marriage together they had three children, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Jere loved people which made working in sales for 36 years enjoyable and he did that successfully for such companies as Seven-Up Bottling and Little Debbie. After leaving the food industry he made his mark within the paint and hardware sundries industry as a manufacturer rep before deciding to start his own business. In 1991 he established JK Dashway that provides courier and freight services. Upon retirement at age 83 he left the business in the most capable hands of his granddaughter, Misty, who still runs the business today.
It's been long debated which is greater, Jere's love for people or for his animals. You can take the person out of the farm but you can't take the farm out of his heart. He truly loved all his four-legged family members from horses and cows to cats and dogs.
Jere's faith was undeniable. He demonstrated his love for Jesus by starting each day in the word of God, sharing his faith with others, and being an obedient servant.
Jere was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Ronnie, Billy and Larry, his sisters Beverly and Margaret, his wife, his daughter Kim and granddaughter Samantha.
He is survived by his siblings Bette, Bob and Brad; children Jeff and wife Kathie, Karla and husband Jeff; grandchildren Amber, Misty and husband PJ, Mike and Nick; great-grands Braden, Leah and husband Isaac, Holli, Lauren, Kacey, Lanie, Ava and Aubrey; great-great-grands: Brinley and Liam; and his faithful Chihuahua, Coco.
The memorial service will be held on Friday, February 25th at 2pm at Charles W. Smith & Sons Funeral home located at 2925 5th Street in Sachse, Texas.
See you in heaven Pompa, Jesus is coming soon!
