George R. Johnson

George R. Johnson Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, brother in law, family member and friend to many went to his heavenly home on Friday, July 3, 2020 in Irving, Texas.

George was born on July 18, 1932 in Belton, Texas to George and Agnes Johnson. He was the eldest of eight children. George was a highly intelligent and ambitious young man. He skipped grades a couple of times in school. He was scheduled for a third skip, but the school's administration felt he was too young to continue moving up so quickly. So, not one to be kept down, George decided to quit school and join the Army Air Corps.
After receiving his honorable discharge, he chose truck driving as his vocation, which quickly became his passion, one he continued until he retired at age 82. During his career, he was either driving for a company, dispatching, or driving owner/operator. He loved everything about the trucking industry, and it served him well throughout his life.

While working in the Garland/Rowlett area, he met a young woman named Billie Cagle, which would one day become his wife and the mother of his five children. During their 50 plus years of marriage, life was not always easy. There were times that George worked several jobs at one time to feed his family. He never complained about the hard work and long hours. The large family was his choice, and he was willing to do what needed to be done to provide for them. George and Billie raised their children in church. They taught them to love God, Family, and Country, in that order.
George was a man with few regrets and accepted there were some that he could never change. However, when he was in his sixties, he decided there was one he could. He signed up with Mesquite ISD to pursue his GED. With little study, he took and passed the test.

George always knew he was living a blessed of God life, and he never worried about the future. He believed if he were faithful to God, God would be faithful to him. After the death of Billie, he continued attending his home church of First Assembly of God in Mesquite, where he would find love a second time. He met and married Lynda Hood. They recently celebrated their sixteenth wedding anniversary. With this union came another daughter, Rebecca Haynes. His family circle grew to include Lynda's brothers, sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews and their growing families. If asked how he was doing, his response was, "Better than I deserve". Lynda was at his side for his homegoing. George and Lynda are founding members of Christian Center of Mesquite.
He was proud to be a life member of both the Lions Club International and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

George is preceded in death by his parents; George and Agnes Johnson; wife, Billie Johnson; son, Johnny Johnson; daughters, Sandra Ortiz and Pamela Voglesong; brothers, James Ray Johnson, John Horton Johnson, and Daniel Harold Johnson; granddaughter Olivia Ortiz; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; and many family members and loved ones.

He is survived by his wife, Lynda Johnson; son, Rick Johnson (Maryann); daughters, Jackie Whitaker (Barrett) and Rebecca Haynes; brothers, Terry Johnson and William Johnson; sisters, Margaret Keeton and Linda Mosley; grandchildren, great grandchildren, sons-in-law; daughters-in-law, and a host of family, friends and loved ones. Those who knew him, loved him. He was known for his loving nature and his quick wit.
George was blessed with 6 children, 10 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. He would jokingly say, "My quiver is full". His legacy will continue…

Family and friends are invited to a visitation at Eastgate Funeral Home at 1910 Eastgate Dr, Garland, Texas 75041 on Friday, July 24 from 6-8pm
Funeral Service will be held at Christian Center of Mesquite at 4401 E. Cartwright Rd., Mesquite, Texas on Saturday, July 25 at 10am.
Immediately following the service, burial will take place at Big A Cemetery at 3740 Big A Rd, Rowlett Texas 75089.

* We ask the public to wear face masks and practice social distancing while at the funeral home. Attendance will be limited to 50 guests at the Funeral Home Chapel.
