Fern Peel

June 21, 1917 — October 21, 2017

Fern Irene Peel passed away Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Day Spring Assisted Living. Known as “Nanny” to all who knew her, she was born in Nashville, Arkansas on June 1917, then moved to Sulphur Springs, TX, where she spent her childhood.


At the age of 16 Irene worked her way through beauty school and began a life-long career as a hair dresser retiring when she was 75. For most of that career she worked in Lubbock, TX, where she raised three girls on her own.


Irene loved people, loved to laugh and when she was younger loved to dance. She also loved to play bingo and had a real gift for winning.


On June 21st of this year she reached the milestone of 100 years and enjoyed a big party with all her friends and family present with gifts and good wishes. Her health declined after that point until she died of natural causes.


She was smart, hard-working and caring. In short, she was an amazing woman and will be profoundly missed.


Irene is survived by the daughters Sandy Steen of Plano, Sharon Barrow of McKinney and Linda Lintenbrink of Wylie. She was the grandmother of five and the great-grandmother of eight.


Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Charles W. Smith and Sons Funeral Home, 601 S. Tennessee St., McKinney, TX 75069 with Jessica Skidmore officiating. Interment will follow at Weaver Cemetery.
