Emily McKellar Mizell Adam
February 4, 1926- January 30, 2014, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother died peacefully surrounded by her two children. Emily, a fourth-generation Texan was born to Guyton and Kate Pinson McKellar and raised in Forney, Texas where she was a cheerleader, played basketball and graduated Valedictorian of her High School class. During World War II at age 16, she boarded a train to the University of Texas where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and made many lifelong friends in her sorority Pi Beta Phi. She married attorney Robert S. Mizell from Kaufman, Texas. After a living briefly in Harlingen, TX, they moved to Dallas where they raised their children and became involved with the community. Emily was very active in the Junior League of Dallas, Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club, The Dallas Woman's Club, The Dallas Garden Club, the Dallas Country Club, her church, and the Highland Park PTAs. Her numerous volunteer activities included Meals on Wheels and decades of tutoring at Fannin Elementary School. She had a passion for traveling and especially enjoyed her years as a Chairman of the PiPhi tours to New York City and overseas destinations. Emily loved playing bridge, reading, and gardening. Her signature flower was the zinnia, and she frequently shared arrangements with family and friends. Her grandchildren thought of her as a Southern and sophisticated woman, committed to teaching them the ways of East Texas manners and an appreciation of culture. Later in life, having been widowed, Emily married Maurice Adam, MD. She lived a life rich in love, laughter, friendship and new experiences. Everyone who knew her was better for it, and she will live on remembered by those she loved and who loved her back. Emily was predeceased by her brother Richard Guyton McKellar of Tyler and her husbands. Emily is survived by her two children: Liz Schoenvogel and her husband Robert C. Schoenvogel, MD, and Robert Guyton Mizell and Jo Paschall of Bandera, Texas; her grandchildren Scott Schoenvogel and his wife Melanie of Dallas, Robert Schoenvogel and his wife Thames of Birmingham, AL, Emily Schoenvogel Klein and her husband John of Dallas; and by great-grandchildren Caroline and Hawkins Schoenvogel, Rob and Gray Schoenvogel, and John and Martin Klein. A Memorial Service celebrating Emily's life will be held on Tuesday, February 4 at 4:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary of Saint Michael and All Angels Epicopal Church.
