Edward Freeman was born on July 23, 1913 in Italy, Texas. He moved to Waxahachie at an early age, where he finished high school and married Rachel Carlton on March 18, 1936. They moved to Hillsboro, where he worked at a Chevrolet dealership as a paint and body man. Soon after, he opened his own paint/ body shop.
In 1942, he and three of his closest friends volunteered for the Army Air Corps. Ed was the lone survivor, of the four. He was attached to Air Transport Command, attaining the rank of staff sergent. He worked in the area of Direction Finding, and was sent to CBI (China, Burma, India), then discharged in January 1946.
He moved to Dallas in 1952 and sold new cars for 14 years, before going into business for himself. He belonged to the Antique Car Club of America, where he shared great antique car events and many memories w/ Rachel, and many other car people. His love was restoring interiors and exteriors of antique cars for friends and acquaintances that were displayed in many parts of the world, and were featured in several movies that were shot in Texas, including the TV movie that was based on the series, Dallas. His own pride and joy was a 1932 Rockne that gained a lot of attention. We had many favorites over the years and enjoyed riding in rumble seats and getting lots of head turning stares and waves that sometimes resulted in lasting friendships.
He was a big fan of pinstriping, and mastered the art. He made more friends than money in the business, but that was his nature. He gained far more from the friends he made, who kept up with him after selling them cars, an unusual trait for a car salesman, and we were very proud of that. He loved his friends and family very much, and no one doubted that.
His wife Rachel predeceased him in 1990, and he is survived by a son, Dennis Edward (Denny), and a daughter, Linda Kay, both of Dallas, two sisters, Betty OHagan of Dallas and Mickey Peery, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and many nieces and nephews and companion Faye King, with whom he kept in daily contact until the very end.
He passed away peacefully December 28, 2010 in loving care at C.C.Young Memorial Center.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church, at 9015 Plano Road, Dallas, 75238, at 2 oclock in the afternoon.
Flowers can be sent, or donations made to his church, in his memory.
