Doris Jean Dennis

March 5, 1941 — July 22, 2018

Doris Jean Dennis of Garland, TX passed from this life into the loving arms of Jesus on Sunday evening, July 22, 2018. Doris accepted God's gift of salvation at Rodgers Baptist Church of Garland, TX in August 1951, and faithfully followed her Lord and Savior throughout her life.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; Floyd and Ruth Dennis; and nephews James E. Dennis Jr,and Justin E. Dennis. Doris is survived by her sisters; Janie George and her husband Tom of Garland, TX; and Shannon Doughty. Doris is also survived by her brothers and their wives; James and Betty Dennis of Nashville, AR; Benny and Doris Dennis of Farmersville, TX; and Donald and Belinda Dennis of Wylie, TX.
Doris is also survived by nieces and nephews; Jan George; Dennis George; John George; Sherri Attaway; Adam Dennis; Rodney Dennis; Ryan Dennis; Jonathan Dennis; Lauren Dastmalchian; Steven Michael Doughty; Amber Doughty; and Brandon Doughty.
Doris is also survived by her very dear friends Emily Perry Smith and her family; and Adam Perry and his family.

Doris enjoyed a long career with the Garland Police Department, retiring in 1995 after 30 years of service. She received a lot of notoriety as Garland's first female police officer and received several awards for her work in law enforcement, including the Ayers B. Compton Humanitarian Award for Texas Police Officers; the Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer Award from the Garland Jaycees; and a Garland PTA Lifetime membership for her service to the community. After retiring from law enforcement, she worked at Group One until retirement.

Doris was a unique person and really quite a character. If there was a party, she wanted to bring all the food. She wouldn't have a stick-on bow on any gift she gave at Christmas; it had to be a lavish bow created by her own hands. She loved the Garland Owls, Texas Longhorns, and Dallas Cowboys, and could talk about football with the best of them. Doris loved her family and friends in her own unique way and was always the life of the party. Though she was small in stature, she was bigger than life. Doris' life can be summed up by John 15:13... "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Doris gave her life in service to others. She served her community faithfully, her friends loyally, and her family lovingly. She always put others first and would often do without, so she could help someone else. Her greatest joy was giving and helping others.
Doris will be missed by all who knew her, and we look forward to meeting her again soon "at His feet."

A graveside service will be at 10:00am Thursday August 2, 2018 at Restland Memorial Park
