Donald Fay Bennett, age 84, of Plano, Texas went home to be with the Lord on February 14, 2020. He was born on April 17th, 1935 in Flint, Michigan to Fay and Edna Bennett.
Don graduated from Flushing High School in 1953 and upon graduation he went directly into the United States Marine Corp. He was active duty for 19 years, 9 months, and 3 days. During his several tours in Vietnam Don was honored with many prestigious awards which included him receiving a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, Air Medal, Meritorious Service, as well as several other ribbons for valor and service. On May 11, 1972 he was given an honorable discharge. After discharge Don felt the need to continue his service so he joined the Civil Service as a Logistic Specialist and later retired in May of 1995.
Once fully retired he settled in Prince George, Virginia but never chose to slow down. He became heavily involved and volunteered his time with the Colonial Heights food pantry where he went from serving 30 families to over 120 families each week.
Don later made the choice to move to Dallas, Texas to be close to family. He then met Connie Maynard at Canyon Creek Baptist Church in May of 2011 and they become fast friends. They left Canyon Creek and became active members at Victory Baptist Church on April 21, 2013 where Don faithfully served before becoming ill in 2017. The two shared the same love for travel and have visited several new cities and states, national parks, and military sites during their 9 years of friendship.
Don is survived by his 4 children, Mike Bennett and wife Diane from Juneau, Alaska; Greg Bennett and his wife Terri from Birmingham, Michigan; daughter Donna and her husband Gary; Lance Bennett and wife Taran; and 4 grandchildren, Nick, Riley, Emma and Lyla. He was preceded in death by his father Fay Bennett, mother Edna, and his best friend, Marine Corps. Dwight Fawn
