Coraliss Charles Carver

Coraliss (Toby) Carver, 96, passed away July 18 in Dallas, TX.

Born in Canton, Illinois, to Charles W. and Nellie E.(Roberts) Carver, he married Dorothy M. Vaughn on July 19, 1942, in Palmyra, Missouri. They were married for 74 years and Dorothy survives.

Also, surviving is their only child Richard Carver (Janet) of Richardson, TX; three grandchildren, Jason M. (Renee) Carver of Western Springs, IL, and their 5 children, Sophia, Sebastian, Oliver, Maximilian, and Lydia; Sara M. (Stewart) Milne of Providence, RI, and their 2 sons, Aiden and Camden; and Charles W. Carver of Austin, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Jesse and Joseph Carver; and 2 sisters, Edna Heil and Mary Orwig.

From 1940-1945 Toby was in the 106th Cavalry Regiment of the U. S. Army and achieved the rank of Sergeant (T-5). He was awarded two Purple Hearts with Cluster for injuries suffered when his tank was destroyed and when he stepped on a land mine. A Bronze Star was awarded for swimming a river at night with a small group to destroy a German gun emplacement. Also, he was awarded 4 bronze battle stars and a Croix de Guerre. Among other actions he was in D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, liberation of Dachau, and escorting the King of Belgium to Switzerland.

Although Toby and Dorothy grew up and lived in Canton for many years, they also lived in Pekin, IL; Cheyenne, WY; Loveland, CO, Colorado Springs, CO; Ponca City, OK; and Garland, TX. He was a parts manager at several automobile dealerships for about 40 years and received several high awards from GM for his management.

Toby was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason in the Canton Morning Star Lodge and an advisor to the Canton DeMolay. He also enjoyed golf, flower gardening, woodworking, and visiting with his grand and great-grandchildren.

Toby died peacefully surrounded by family.

Visitation will be from 3PM-5PM on Sunday, July 24th, at Eastgate Funeral Home in Garland. His funeral and burial will be at 10:30 AM on Monday, July 25th, at the National Cemetery at 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas.
