Charles Allen Walker

August 2, 1943 — September 24, 2024

Garland

Charles Allen Walker, or Shorty, as he was always so affectionately known, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the home he shared with Barbara, his loving wife of 57 years. He was a beloved husband, father, Gramps, Great Gramps, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, and will be so dearly missed.

Shorty was born in Hubbard, Texas, to Woodrow Walker and Lola Bell (Vardeman) Walker. He started school in Hubbard, then moved to Garland in early elementary school and continued to Garland High School, where he graduated in 1961. A few years later, he met Barbara Littlefield, and his life changed forever. They were married on June 2, 1967, at Big Springs Baptist Church and started their family. Shorty worked as a Garland taxi cab driver and at TP&L, but spent most of his career at the City of Garland Water Department where he retired after 25 years. He was a member of Pleasant Valley UMC early in their marriage, then joined Big Springs Baptist Church where Barbara had grown up. He was a devoted member the remainder of his life.

If you knew Shorty, you know he was passionate about everyone he knew and loved. He was a people person and loved to reminisce and visit. He was proud of where he came from and where he lived, and had a special place in his heart for those he grew up with and those he met along the way. If you grew up with him, worked with him, went to church with him, or just encountered him in passing, you experienced his joking and humor and knew he cared about you.

With his family, he showed his love abundantly. He cherished his wife and bragged on her constantly. He took immense pride in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, supporting them through everything with that same humor and unconditional love multiplied.

A love of Jesus Christ filled Shorty’s heart and overflowed to others. Shorty brought joy with him wherever he went. He loved the Lord. He loved life. He loved people. He will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.

Shorty is survived by his wife, Barbara, daughter Melodee Waggoner and husband Robert, son Shane and wife Chrissy, grandchildren Jackson and his wife Becky, Forrest, Josey, Ashleigh, Kendall, Elexxus, Baylee, and Jenna, and great grandchildren Cameron and Ashton, brother Michael Walker and his wife Peggy, and his sister’s husband, Bobby Roan.

He was also blessed with many brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sister Margaret.
