Ann M. Hamby

October 26, 1940 — December 5, 2020

Ann Marie Hamby passed away at the age of 80 on Saturday, December 5, 2020. She was a loving wife, a proud mother, and a doting grand and great-grandmother.

Ann was born in the town of McKinney, Texas on October 26, 1940 to David and Mary Allen, where she, along with her brothers David and Charlie, were proud to call this close-knit community home through their school years. Graduating from McKinney High in 1959, Ann maintained ties to the town and its people throughout the many years that followed – especially her "McKinney Lady Friends" as they came to be known. Ann married the love of her life, "Smiling" Tom, on March 25, 1960 – a marriage that would endure over 60 years! Together they raised four children, daughter, Julie, and three sons, Kip, Jason and Sy.

Ann's passions included her family and her piano. Not necessarily in that order! She was always so proud of her family – she would beam ear to ear while going on about her children or her brothers – or the many other friends she held dear. She genuinely wished for and recognized the best in people. She also cherished time with her large extended family and close friends, ensuring many weekends and Holidays were spent in their company. Music and especially the piano were dear to Ann. Many an hour could be heard with Ann playing her piano deep into the night. She loved music, and shared her gift by playing Wednesday night services for many years at the First United Methodist Church of McKinney – the Church she grew up in. She enjoyed serving in this and other capacities over the years for the Church. Her relationship with the Lord was a priority, and always well nurtured through the years, cultivated by quiet times of prayer and reading her Bible with a cup of coffee in hand. She also had an interest in literature and was a gifted writer – from penning a jingle to commemorate the birth of a grandchild to writing short stories full of her vivid imaginings! She frequently encouraged her grand kids to read, often gifting them books with a hand-written note of encouragement in them. She also stressed the importance of education, having herself returned to college later in life to complete her degree in education.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, David and Mary Allen, stepfather Raymond Smith, grandson Jack Hamby, great-grandson Asher Greene, and her nephew Chip Allen. She is survived by her husband Tom, her four children, Kip and wife Shari, Julie and husband Ken, Jason, and wife Stephanie and Sy and wife Kelley, her brothers David and wife LaVonne Allen and Dr. Charlie and wife Shelly Allen, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Did we mention grandkids? Eighteen grand kids – and eleven great-grandkids!
