Andres F. Velasco Davila

June 6, 1996 — April 24, 2017

Andres Felipe Velasco Davila is a native of Cali, Colombia and moved to the United States with his family when he was in the third grade. A shy but tenacious boy, Andres excelled academically and athletically from a very young age. An honors student at the prestigious magnet schools, Austin Academy Middle School & North Garland High School, in Garland, TX, Andres was an avid soccer, football and tuba player. While playing varsity football at the math, science and technology magnet high school, Andres was a GISD Superintendent Scholar, a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and a member of the Duke University Talent Identification Program. In 2014, he received the AP Scholar with Distinction Award in recognition of exemplary college level achievement on advanced placement program examinations. Andres was also a beloved member of Boy Scout Troop #57 of Garland TX and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout by the time he turned 16. He later earned the Bronze Palm and served as a Senior Patrol Leader for a troop that numbered more than 100 boys. Showing his continued support for the Boy Scouts organization and further demonstrating his leadership skills, Andres often spoke to large groups about the benefits of scouting in helping young boys to build confidence, learn responsibility and the importance of having a positive effect on others. Andres Velasco received a scholarship to attend Mizzou College in Columbia, Missouri and was recognized as an honor student in his freshman year of studies. He spent the summer of 2016 studying abroad in Rome, Italy and worked as a server at the Olive Garden in Columbia, Missouri. Andres was expected to graduate with a degree in Aeronautical & Mechanical Engineering from Mizzou College in June 2017. Andres and his family are members of Northplace Church in Sachse, TX.

On Sunday afternoon, April 2, 2017, following a spring break visit to his family home in Rowlett, TX, Andres and two of his college friends were on their way back to Missouri to attend classes on Monday morning. Andres and his friends were traveling by car, under the published speed limit in torrential rain when their vehicle hydroplaned into a tree. The car accident caused critical injuries to Andres that later took his life after a 22- day battle in an Oklahoma hospital’s intensive care unit.

Andres is survived by his father, Elmer Augusto Velasco Arias, mother Sandra Patricia Davila Suarez, brother, Miguel Angel Velasco Davila, Uncles, Mario Davila Suarez & Alex Velasco Arias, Grandmother, Imelda Arias, Great Grandmother, Adela Suarez, Grandfather, Alfredo Ramirez and cousins, Sofia Davila Martinez, Samuel Davila Martinez & Juan Diego Navarro Ramirez.
