May 24th, 1988 – Sept. 15th 2019
Duncan Alexander Shurtleff passed away on Sunday, Sept. 15.
Alex always had a smile on his face and a big bear hug for those he loved. He was the first to pitch in a helping hand for any job. Being the second oldest of 10 children, he loved his siblings and was intentional about spending time with each one of them. He was generous and always made sure to bring his family gifts from his deployments around the world. His infectious energy propelled him through gymnastics and made it a joy to spend time with him. Alex enlisted in the Air Force in 2008, where he served for 7 years and was deployed in Korea, Qatar, and Kuwait with a short "visit" to Afghanistan. He continued his service in the Air Force Reserves with a recent deployment to Romania.
Alex was well-known for being the first to scoop up his niece and nephews and the young kids of his close friends, cradle them in a football hold and allow the parents a few minutes of respite or simply time to enjoy a meal. Uncle Alex enjoyed the challenge of finding the noisiest toys with the brightest flashing lights as gifts for the children of his friends and family, knowing full well how annoying those toys would be to the parents. He was the designated turkey carver for the gargantuan Shurtleff Thanksgiving Day celebrations, and the first to start touch football games after the meal. Alex's belief in Christ and God's saving grace allows us to celebrate his life knowing of his eternal resting place.
Alex is survived by his parents; Preston and Corbi Shurtleff; grandparents; Marcia Shurtleff, James Smith, and Jeanie Martin; sister Jessica and husband Roy Lehman, with their children Abigail and Luke; brother Graham and his son Patrick; sister Hannah and Phillip Pearson; sisters Clara and Elena; and brothers Gabriel, Peter, Paul, and Jon.
